Apple co-founder Steve Jobs has resigned as chief executive of the technology giant and will be replaced by chief operating officer Tim Cook.

Mr Jobs, who underwent a liver transplant following pancreatic cancer, said he could no longer meet his chief executive’s duties and expectations.

The Silicon Valley legend will become chairman of the firm.

The 56-year-old has been on medical leave for an undisclosed condition since 17 January.

In a short letter to the board of Apple, Mr Jobs wrote: “I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple’s chief executive, I would be the first to let you know.

“Unfortunately, that day has come. I hereby resign as chief executive of Apple.

“I believe Apple’s brightest and most innovative days are ahead of it. And I look forward to watching and contributing to its success in a new role.

Consumers react to Steve Jobs’ resignation

“I have made some of the best friends of my life at Apple, and I thank you all for the many years of being able to work alongside you.”

Apple board member Art Levinson paid tribute to Mr Jobs’ contribution to the company: “Steve’s extraordinary vision and leadership saved Apple and guided it to its position as the world’s most innovative and valuable technology company.”

‘Hugely successful’

Apple shares have fallen 4.1% in the secondary listing in Frankfurt, having dropped more than 5% in after-market trading on New York’s Nasdaq.

Analysts said the resignation was not unexpected, and would have little impact on the day-to-day running of the company.

“Steve is [still] going to be able to provide the input he would do as a chief executive,” said Colin Gillis at BGC Financial.

“But Tim has been de facto chief executive for some time and the company has been hugely successful. The vision and the roadmap is intact.”

AnalysisRory Cellan-JonesTechnology correspondent

This is a sad day for Apple and for the whole technology industry, as its most charismatic and successful leader of recent years brings down the curtain on an extraordinary career.

Steve Jobs addressed his brief letter of resignation not just to his company’s board but to the Apple community – and millions worldwide will feel he was talking to them.

Forceful bosses whose personalities shape everything about their businesses are going out of fashion these days, for good reason many would say.

But Steve Jobs is a rare example of a chief executive who is synonymous with his company, a perfectionist who obsesses over every detail and has been the public face of just about every major product launch in the past decade.

It’s difficult to imagine Apple without him – but he’s leaving having revived what was an ailing business when he returned in the late 1990s, and turned it into the world’s wealthiest company and one which has done more than any other in recent years to shape consumer technology.

Read more from Rory

Nor will customers see any real difference, analysts said.

“At the end of the day, consumers don’t buy products from Apple because they’re from Steve Jobs, they buy them because they meet their needs and they’re good products, and they’ll continue to do that,” Michael Gartenberg from Gartner told the BBC.

The company has some big products on the horizon such as the iPhone 5 and the iPad 3.

But while Apple shares slid, shares in two of Apple’s main Asian rivals gained. Taiwan-based phone maker HTC rose 4.1%, while South Korea’s Samsung Electronics gained 3.2%.

The firms compete with Apple in the smartphone and tablet-PC sector, and have been involved in legal battles with Apple over patent rights.

The boss of another rival in the phone market paid tribute to Mr Jobs’ work.

“Steve Jobs is a visionary in the computing industry,” said Stephen Elop, chief executive of Nokia.

“We look forward to both Steve and his team having a positive impact on our industry for many years to come.”

SEO is an acronym for “search engine optimization” or “search engine optimizer.” Deciding to hire an SEO is a big decision that can potentially improve your site and save time, but you can also risk damage to your site and reputation. Make sure to research the potential advantages as well as the damage that an irresponsible SEO can do to your site. Many SEOs and other agencies and consultants provide useful services for website owners, including:

Review of your site content or structure

Technical advice on website development: for example, hosting, redirects, error pages, use of JavaScript

Content development

Management of online business development campaigns

Keyword research

SEO training

Expertise in specific markets and geographies.

Keep in mind that the Google search results page includes organic search results and often paid advertisement (denoted by the heading “Sponsored Links”) as well. Advertising with Google won’t have any effect on your site’s presence in our search results. Google never accepts money to include or rank sites in our search results, and it costs nothing to appear in our organic search results. Free resources such as Webmaster Tools, the official Webmaster Central blog, and our discussion forum can provide you with a great deal of information about how to optimize your site for organic search. Many of these free sources, as well as information on paid search, can be found on Google Webmaster Central.

Before beginning your search for an SEO, it’s a great idea to become an educated consumer and get familiar with how search engines work. We recommend starting here:

Google Webmaster Guidelines

Google 101: How Google crawls, indexes and serves the web.

If you’re thinking about hiring an SEO, the earlier the better. A great time to hire is when you’re considering a site redesign, or planning to launch a new site. That way, you and your SEO can ensure that your site is designed to be search engine-friendly from the bottom up. However, a good SEO can also help improve an existing site.

Some useful questions to ask an SEO include:

Can you show me examples of your previous work and share some success stories?

Do you follow the Google Webmaster Guidelines?

Do you offer any online marketing services or advice to complement your organic search business?

What kind of results do you expect to see, and in what timeframe? How do you measure your success?

What’s your experience in my industry?

What’s your experience in my country/city?

What’s your experience developing international sites?

What are your most important SEO techniques?

How long have you been in business?

How can I expect to communicate with you? Will you share with me all the changes you make to my site, and provide detailed information about your recommendations and the reasoning behind them?

While SEOs can provide clients with valuable services, some unethical SEOs have given the industry a black eye through their overly aggressive marketing efforts and their attempts to manipulate search engine results in unfair ways. Practices that violate our guidelines may result in a negative adjustment of your site’s presence in Google, or even the removal of your site from our index. Here are some things to consider:

Be wary of SEO firms and web consultants or agencies that send you email out of the blue.Amazingly, we get these spam emails too:

“Dear google.com,
I visited your website and noticed that you are not listed in most of the major search engines and directories…”

Reserve the same skepticism for unsolicited email about search engines as you do for “burn fat at night” diet pills or requests to help transfer funds from deposed dictators.

No one can guarantee a #1 ranking on Google.Beware of SEOs that claim to guarantee rankings, allege a “special relationship” with Google, or advertise a “priority submit” to Google. There is no priority submit for Google. In fact, the only way to submit a site to Google directly is through our Add URL page or by submitting a Sitemap and you can do this yourself at no cost whatsoever.

Be careful if a company is secretive or won’t clearly explain what they intend to do.Ask for explanations if something is unclear. If an SEO creates deceptive or misleading content on your behalf, such as doorway pages or “throwaway” domains, your site could be removed entirely from Google’s index. Ultimately, you are responsible for the actions of any companies you hire, so it’s best to be sure you know exactly how they intend to “help” you. If an SEO has FTP access to your server, they should be willing to explain all the changes they are making to your site.

You should never have to link to an SEO.Avoid SEOs that talk about the power of “free-for-all” links, link popularity schemes, or submitting your site to thousands of search engines. These are typically useless exercises that don’t affect your ranking in the results of the major search engines — at least, not in a way you would likely consider to be positive.

Choose wisely. While you consider whether to go with an SEO, you may want to do some research on the industry. Google is one way to do that, of course. You might also seek out a few of the cautionary tales that have appeared in the press, including this article on one particularly aggressive SEO: http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/businesstechnology/2002002970_nwbizbriefs12.html. While Google doesn’t comment on specific companies, we’ve encountered firms calling themselves SEOs who follow practices that are clearly beyond the pale of accepted business behavior. Be careful.

Be sure to understand where the money goes. While Google never sells better ranking in our search results, several other search engines combine pay-per-click or pay-for-inclusion results with their regular web search results. Some SEOs will promise to rank you highly in search engines, but place you in the advertising section rather than in the search results. A few SEOs will even change their bid prices in real time to create the illusion that they “control” other search engines and can place themselves in the slot of their choice. This scam doesn’t work with Google because our advertising is clearly labeled and separated from our search results, but be sure to ask any SEO you’re considering which fees go toward permanent inclusion and which apply toward temporary advertising.

What are the most common abuses a website owner is likely to encounter?

One common scam is the creation of “shadow” domains that funnel users to a site by using deceptive redirects. These shadow domains often will be owned by the SEO who claims to be working on a client’s behalf. However, if the relationship sours, the SEO may point the domain to a different site, or even to a competitor’s domain. If that happens, the client has paid to develop a competing site owned entirely by the SEO.

Another illicit practice is to place “doorway” pages loaded with keywords on the client’s site somewhere. The SEO promises this will make the page more relevant for more queries. This is inherently false since individual pages are rarely relevant for a wide range of keywords. More insidious, however, is that these doorway pages often contain hidden links to the SEO’s other clients as well. Such doorway pages drain away the link popularity of a site and route it to the SEO and its other clients, which may include sites with unsavory or illegal content.

What are some other things to look out for?

owns shadow domains

puts links to their other clients on doorway pages

offers to sell keywords in the address bar

doesn’t distinguish between actual search results and ads that appear on search results pages

guarantees ranking, but only on obscure, long keyword phrases you would get anyway

operates with multiple aliases or falsified WHOIS info

gets traffic from “fake” search engines, spyware, or scumware

has had domains removed from Google’s index or is not itself listed in Google

There are a few warning signs that you may be dealing with a rogue SEO. It’s far from a comprehensive list, so if you have any doubts, you should trust your instincts. By all means, feel free to walk away if the SEO:

This whole business of dots per inch (dpi), pixels per inch (ppi), or even pixels per centimeter (ppc, for our European friends), can be downright confusing, even for seasoned pros (we had a well-known Photoshop writer give us an email tongue-lashing about this very subject. Was she ever embarrassed when we pointed out her mistake).

We’re going to boil it down to the bare minimum. Forget about the dpi of an image. It’s pretty much irrelevant until ink hits paper. What is important? Total number of pixels. The resolution can be set to anything — 72 or 300 or even 3000 dpi — as long as the total number of pixels in the file are kept the same, it’s all good.

Now, we are certainly not saying you should up-res or up-sample your images, as it’s referred to. This is where people really get confused. They’ve always been told that increasing the resolution of a file is bad — and it generally is* — but that’s not what we’re doing here. We’re scaling the image instead of up-sampling and we’re going to do it in a way where the number of pixels won’t change.

Here is the most important thing to remember: the dpi of a file is just a way to measure it. When someone says they need a 300 dpi file, every file can be measured at 300 dpi, whether it happens to be saved that way or not. For example, let’s say you just shot a picture with your spiffy new camera. It’s 3500 x 3530 pixels, but by default the image was saved at 72 dpi. So if you divide the numbers of pixels by 72 dpi, you will get the total number of inches the picture can be reproduced at.

Let’s take a look at the original image alongside Photoshop’s Image Size dialog box:

There are several important things to note in this screenshot:

1. At the bottom of the document window itself, you can see the file is indeed large — It’s 35 MB (circled in red).

2. Note the pixel dimensions shown in the upper portion of the Image Size dialog box: 3500 x 3530. Remember these numbers for a few minutes.

3. Note the physical dimensions of this image if we were to try and print it at the current resolution of 72 dpi — it would be a ridiculously large 48.6 inches by 49 inches.

Now let’s change the resolution of the image without messing with the number of pixels, thereby preserving the quality.

Step 1: In Photoshop, choose Image > Image Size.

Step 2: At the bottom of the dialog box, uncheck Resample Image. This locks the number of pixels contained in the image, thereby locking the quality. Enter 300 into the resolution box and look at what we get:

The image is now 300 dpi and the physical dimensions have decreased to about 11.7 x 11.8 inches. See how the physical dimensions of the image changed, but not the pixel information? We have exactly the same number of pixels we started out with: 3500 x 3530. Notice how the size of the image didn’t change at all? It’s still 35 MB. The quality of the image is completely unaffected, only the measurement (dpi) of the the physical output size has been altered.

As long as you remember to uncheck the Resample Image box, you can tweak the resolution as needed and you won’t hurt the image quality at all. Seriously.

When determining what size image to buy for a particular project, figure out if you need to print the image or not, and if so, what physical size does that printed image need to be. When looking at images on our site, you can toggle between pixel measurements or physical size by inches — that’s right, we’ve already done the math for you.

Even if the file happens to be 72 dpi when you open it in Photoshop, now you’re armed with the proper technique for changing it. After all, just because you’re printing the image doesn’t necessarily mean it has to be 300 dpi. If you’re doing commercial printing, talk to your printer about what’s required. If it’s a color newspaper ad, you’ll only need 150 to 200 dpi max. A glossy magazine: 266 to 300 dpi. A high-end coffee-table book using stochastic screening: maybe even 350 dpi.

Home printers generally require at least 150 dpi for a nice print job. There are many printers available to the average consumer that do an excellent job at 225-250 dpi. The best thing to do for your own printer is to run a few tests. Can you tell the difference between 200 and 300 dpi?

We hope that this article eliminates any further resolution confusion and we hope you can see that we’re not trying to pull one over on you. So the next time you think you’ve been duped with a 72 dpi image, just relax, take a deep breath, and remember: It’s all about the pixels, baby!

*Upsampling is often used to make really, really, really big images and it’s not all bad. If you need to upsample an image — for a billboard for example — we sent out a tip a couple months ago with some advice.
